The Smart Grids Programme is one of the six flag ship programmes within SANEDI.
The Programme is aligned to the strategic objectives of the Department of Energy and is focused on the introduction of the various concepts of smart grids within the South African Electricity Distribution Industry (EDI). In the context of South Africa's electricity needs, strategic initiatives and technological advancements are needed to modernize the electrical grid by urgently addressing the sustainability of municipal distribution utilities. SANEDI in consultation with the Department of Energy (DoE) in 2012 established the South Africa Smart Grid Initiative (SASGI). The technical assistance to the SA-EU Dialogue intends to close the existing gaps within the draft smart grid vision document that was developed earlier, through a three tiered approach employing: three strategic workshops, a study tour leading to capacity building and technical assistance. The ultimate goal is the development of a more inclusive and streamlined smart grid vision for South Africa.
The process of developing the Smart Grid Vision document entails:
- Engagement with local stakeholders in a series of three workshops to capture true reflections of the South African - Electricity supply Industry (ESI) smart grid policy recommendations and best practices
- Development of an analysis report on the policy and implementation gaps within the document.
- Organising a study tour and gathering of information on approaches by EU partners. Developing study tour materials/ contents (presentations, agendas, reports, surveys)
- Preparation of a final Vision document
