TUTORIAL VIDEOS FOR ENERGY ACCESS MARKET DEVELOPMENT
Following the EnDev Portfolio Review and Programming Support provided to the HQ team of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) under the “Support for EnDev Portfolio Review and Programming 2022” assignment, DEM was contracted to further develop, update, maintain, and apply the Energy Access Market Development (EAMD) Scorecard.
The Energy Access Market Development (EAMD) model is mainly used by organizations working in energy access, rural electrification, clean cooking, and sustainable development programs. It was originally developed within the Energising Development (EnDev) program and is now applied by development agencies, consultants, governments, NGOs, and donors involved in SDG7 (“Affordable and Clean Energy”).
The EAMD model is essentially a market analysis and monitoring tool.
It helps stakeholders:
- Describe the current state of an energy access market
- Analyze how the market is changing over time
- Identify barriers and gaps
- Design interventions to strengthen the market
- Track progress and impacts of programs and investments
The model examines three major dimensions of a market:
- Supply side
(manufacturers, distributors, technicians, financing) - Demand side
(consumer awareness, affordability, willingness to pay) - Enabling environment
(policies, regulations, subsidies, institutions, infrastructure)
The scorecard tracks about 19 indicators across these dimensions.
Part of this assignment for RVO included the production of a series of EAMD tutorial videos.
The purpose was primarily to help users feel confident and comfortable navigating the tool by making it appear more accessible and less complex. Although the workbook contains numerous sheets and colour codings, the intention was to demonstrate that it is both structured and manageable in practice. Particular emphasis was placed on clearly distinguishing between sheets requiring user input and those intended solely for reviewing results. The videos enable first time users to familiarize themselves with the tool before using it to describe a particular energy access market.
