South Africa – Report on Clean Cooking Technologies

This assignment, implemented by DEM’s Global Team together with long-term local partner, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), delivered a report on energy poverty in South Africa with a specific focus on clean cooking technologies.

The work included a comprehensive market assessment of energy access and energy use, with emphasis on clean cooking and heating solutions. The study concentrated on rural areas—particularly communities in Mpumalanga, including those affected by the region’s coal-mining legacy—and applied a gender-informed approach by focusing on women as key decision-makers.

The report supported South Africa’s Just Energy Transition by identifying opportunities to reduce energy poverty, contribute to universal energy access, and promote a more sustainable energy sector.
